about

Exodus 34:7 says the Lord is "visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation." John Piper comments on this verse by saying, "The sins of the fathers are punished in the children through becoming the sins of the children." Therefore, parents should be open and honest with their kids about the sinful "tendencies" they struggle with, so they don't follow in their footsteps...

So in this song, my wife and I compiled our sinful tendencies as a warning to our own children.

lyrics

(Chorus)
Oh we don’t want you fallin’
Into the same kinds of things that we did
But the sins of ya mother and father
Are the footsteps ya following in
But sometimes we just so broken
Haunted by these painful memories
Oh dear children heed this warning
And look and listen for these tendencies

(Verse1)
I tend to be self-righteous, in terms of checking boxes
A pharisee who apparently can be obnoxious
And that behaviors toxic, plus I’m people pleaser
Get more concerned a person likes me then them meeting Jesus
I hate to see my weakness, its something I don’t mention
On top of that when people talk I gotta problem listening
I guess my disposition.. is that I’m legalistic
Like if I’m good then God is close and when I’m bad He’s distant
Ya see I’m inconsistent, call me a hypocrite
Can’t hit the target but surprised that you be missing it
Acting significant... making a wrong face
Forget I’m a recipient of grace upon grace
Jesus made a strong case when He said to “be perfect”
Rather then repent I guess I tend to pretend on the surface
Plus I lust after surplus for person place thing
And often seek my own glory rather than that of my King

(Bridge)
Ya see the sins of the mothers and fathers
Are passed down to they sons and daughters
And since ya momma and ya dad got problems
We thought it best to tell ya all about them (X2)

(Verse 2)
Ya momma said she has a problem with her criticism
She tends to expect perfection though she knows she isn’t
She gave ya dad permission to speak about her idols
To warn ya how a God of comfort becomes Jesus rival
But since she knows the Bible tends to take His grace for granted
And puts herself right in the center when she paints a canvas
It makes for greater damage when she gossips ears are buzzin’
The more she looks on other’s sin the more she thinks doesn’t
She’s quick at passing judgement, good at assigning motives
She’s got some anger issues dangerous she gets explosive
Cuz when she’s in the moment struggles with her self-control
She lets her tongue set a fire to a helpless soul
These are the episodes that display her depraved condition
She tends to not forgive forgetting what she’s been forgiven
Falls back into religion like lets just make this quick
Forgetting Jesus is waiting for a relationship

(Bridge)
Ya see the sins of the mothers and fathers
Are passed down to they sons and daughters
And since ya momma and ya dad got problems
We thought it best to tell ya all about them (X2)

(Chorus)
Oh we don’t want you fallin’
Into the same kinds of things that we did
But the sins of ya mother and father
Are the footsteps ya following in
But sometimes we just so broken
Haunted by these painful memories
Oh dear children heed this warning
And look and listen for these tendencies
